The baTonga people in Zambia are closely related to those in Zimbabwe. In fact, both countries were once part of Rhodesia. The Tonga baskets are woven on radials of 'creepers' (vines) and palm leaves are sometimes dyed with bark and roots to make up the designs. 3 primary types of baskets are done: Plateau, Munyumbwe and Sinazeze. All are similar in materials but differ in construction due to varying geographic based weaving styles. This basket is from the Munyumbwe area, named for where it is woven. Munyumbwe baskets are a heavy double thick weave that takes extra time and effort to create. The back is coiled and looped together, then front is woven over that in a style similar to plateau baskets. So you end up with a thick walled, sturdy, shallow bowl with a unique type of pattern. Approximately 6-7 diameter and 2-3" deep.
