The baTonga people in Zambia are closely related to those in Zimbabwe. In fact, both countries were once part of Rhodesia. The Tonga baskets are woven on radials of 'creepers' (vines) and palm leaves may be dyed with bark and roots to make up the designs. 3 primary types of baskets are done: Plateau, Munyumbwe, and Sinazeze. All are similar in materials but construction techniques vary with geographic based weaving styles. This is a Plateau basket which is traditionally used for winnowing grain. The heavy rim reinforces the basket and makes it strong enough to winnow large amounts of grain.
